Career Counseling
Are You Unhappy Or Unsatisfied In Your Career?
Do you feel unfulfilled in your work, but afraid to make a change? Are you interested in entering a new field, taking on a leadership role or shifting career paths, but have doubts about your ability to make the transition and excel? Have you considered completing a career assessment, but question whether an aptitude test can really help you narrow down your interests and find work you enjoy?
You may struggle to get out of bed in the morning, feeling anxious or overwhelmed by the day’s responsibilities. Or, you might get home after a long day wanting to relax, but feel too stressed by what might happen and all you have to balance tomorrow. Maybe you are going through the motions in your career, but feel disconnected from your work and/or coworkers. Perhaps you have been in the same field for years and want to try something new, but aren’t sure how to find the right job openings or make yourself stand out from other applicants. Or, maybe you want to start your own business, but feel like doing so would be impractical or selfish. You might be providing for your family or paying off debts and feel obligated to stay in your current position to maintain financial stability.
Career stress and uncertainty can leave you questioning yourself and your decisions, and you may blame yourself for your career challenges. To make things more difficult, feelings of self-doubt may be creating conflict or distance in your relationships. You may recognize that you need support with your career and guidance as you update your resume, prepare for interviews and learn to utilize the many new online job search tools, but you aren’t sure where you can turn for effective, personalized career counseling. Do you wish you had the resources, skills, courage and professional guidance you needed to make a career change?
Almost Everyone Faces Career Challenges
Many individuals feel stuck in their jobs, unsure how to choose or pursue a career where they will feel satisfied. They recognize that they are stressed and unhappy, but do not believe they have the experience, knowledge or skills they need to be successful in a new role or field. Others feel unprepared or overwhelmed as they move into leadership positions and take on greater organizational and management responsibilities. We often associate our careers with our identities and social status, and we may not feel like we have the freedom to make different choices. In addition, financial obligations and the cost of raising a family can make it hard to take a risk when you rely on a steady paycheck. You may worry that you won’t be able to pay your bills or provide for your family if you pursue a career change.
Understanding your professional goals and needs can be a lifelong process, and it is natural to have doubts and questions as you consider a career transition. Job coaching at Unity Psychological Consulting can help you recognize stressors, identify career options and put tools in place that will help you foster a more satisfying professional life.
Take Control Of Your Career With Career Counseling
By seeking career coaching services, you can talk about your professional concerns and identify emotional barriers or personal responsibilities that may be preventing you from making a positive change. We will work together to pinpoint and build on your strengths and interests so you can understand why you are stressed or unhappy and what you can do to feel confident, productive and fulfilled in the workplace.
With my professional career guidance and support, you can develop concrete tools and skills to help you feel empowered and foster a more satisfying career. By developing effective interpersonal, communication and leadership skills, you can deal with pressure and conflict with greater ease. You can recognize when stress is impacting your personal life or relationships and gain the confidence you need to find relief, establish boundaries and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
During our sessions, we can work together to update your resume or cover letter, complete mock interviews and explore your options when conducting an online job search. In some cases, I may recommend you complete career assessment tests so we can get a better sense of what sort of work or workplace would fit your personality, needs and goals. A career test, or aptitude test, can provide a wealth of information about your strengths, interests and experience. It gives you a solid foundation, helping you take gradual and strategic steps so you can move from where you are to where you want to be.
I have been helping individuals respond to stress, doubt and uncertainty in their careers for years. I recognize how difficult a career transition can be, whether you are taking on additional responsibilities, moving to a new field or starting your own business. By collaborating with me at Unity, you can take control of your career and feel excited and engaged in your work.
You may be interested in career coaching services but still have questions or concerns…
What if the career assessment test doesn’t tell me anything new?
Aptitude tests are not about right and wrong answers, but about getting a sense of your work personality, strengths, values, interests, motivators, skills and what sort of workplace you would enjoy. Together, we will look at the common threads in your responses, helping you recognize interests and skills that you may not have been aware of before and what potential career directions are a fit for you.
What happens if I still can’t make a career decision?
During our sessions, I help you develop professional resources, knowledge and skills so you can make an informed, confident career decision. In some cases, however, you may be dealing with an ingrained concern or doubt that keeps you from feeling free to make a change. You might worry your decision will disappoint a family member or that you can’t afford to leave your current position. Many professionals are so unhappy and stressed in their careers that, without making a change, they end up developing more serious conditions, including anxiety or depression. We will work together to identify career roadblocks and understand how they are impacting your personal life and relationships. If a separate or related issue – such as anxiety, trauma, grief or ADD – is contributing to or resulting from your career challenges, I can provide psychoeducation and referrals to additional therapy resources so you can get needed support as you explore the issue and take control of your career.
I’m not sure I can afford to work with a career counselor.
Our finances often play a large role when we are making career decisions, and it is natural to question whether meeting with a career counselor or taking a career assessment is worth the cost. If you decide to complete a career assessment, a one-time fee will cover the cost of the test and the time we spend discussing your responses and various assessment tools. Consider how much you will benefit – emotionally and financially – when you can regain your confidence, focus and productivity in the workplace.
